Arriving in Vienna, 30th May

After an early start - 6am, and a huge breakfast consisting of an egg foo young type dish made with lemon balm, along with turkish coffee, croissants, apple strudel and yogurt, we rolled ourselves out of the house and squeezed into the van to set off for the trainstation.

We arrived in plenty of time and found ourselves a lovely private cabin which we had not booked or paid for. We'd only paid for 2nd class seats.

The conductor didn't seem to mind and it was only a 90 minute trip anyway before we changed trains.

This was completely baffling as we had no idea what platform to go to and finally found an officer to help who looked up his computer thing and told us we had to be on platform 4 in 4 minutes because the train was leaving.

10 bags, 3 people along the platform,, down the stairs, turn right, along the platform, up the stairs, find a conductor who throws us onto the train.

We found a seat and sat down only to find we were on the wrong carriage by 3, with our 10 bags. This is one of the places we passed: Jew's Borough

Finally in the correct seats we settled in for the remainder of the 3.5 hour trip. It was mostly uneventful and we ate about half of the food we'd bought the day before. This ended up being fortuitus as when we arrived at our AirBnb and went out shopping we discovered it was a public holiday and everything was shut. There are very few living unicorns here.

Outside our window there is a town incinerator decorated by Hunderwasser. At the top there is a chimney. For more information click here

It's raining. Vienna has been decorated by grafitti "artists". It's dirty, and there's rubbish everywhere. The apartment we are in is spotlessly clean inside, it's rather warm due to the inefficient central heating, but there's everything we need. Except an aircon.

Bruce and I walked around the city for a bit and discovered that it's Corpus Christi day and lots of places are closed. There wa a pizza place open across the road but in the end we were too tired to go out so we ate what was left from previous supermarket excursions.

Tomorrow we explore the wonders of Vienna before our cruise starts at 4 pm .
