The magnificent Postojna cave - 29 May

Wednesday morning we checked out of the Golden fields apartment and took all our gear to Branko's place. After another huge breakfast we set off for the caves, photos to follow. We arrived in time for the first tour at 9.15, which finished just after 10. The caves are magnificent, and there are handy audio guides so keep us informed along the way.

After this we set off to see a castle built into a rockface, with caves below. We were assured that the inside of the castle was nothing much to look at, and it cost 19 Euro each. Then two bus loads of kids arrived and 3 bus loads of Asian tourists a few minutes later and we decided the castle was full anyway.

We set off for home, and driving at 130km per hour without using indicators was doing great things for my blood pressure. I wouldn't call it a premonition, but we'd been driving heaps and this was the only time I really felt that it wasn't safe. I messaged Ruth that we were on the way home from sightseeing, just in case anything happened. About ten minutes later Branko slammed on his brakes as all the traffic was braking in front of us. We crept forward for about 5 minutes and came across a body covered by a blanket and then 50 metres further down a crumpled bike.

We passed an ambulance after that on it's way to the scene and heard that the motorway was closed for an hour.

Spent the rest of the way home praying for the family of that unfortunate person.

We stopped for lunch at some roadside kebab type place that was Branko's favourite, and we shouted everyone lunch. It was not memorable. I prefer shopping for sandwiches at the supermarket. The last two times I've bought some pretty impressive assembled salads for much the same price, about 3 Euros. Today we did not get eaten by any bears.

That afternoon, after a nap, Selah, Bruce and I went out shopping to buy snacks for the trip to Vienna the following day, along with getting some more Euro's out of the ATM and stocking up on anti-histamines. It's Spring here of course.

Juliette in the meantime had cooked up an enormous feast of grilled fish and sauteed vegies and salad, and then we settled in for a praise and worship time with one of their neighbours Tatiana. She turned out to be the pen pal of my sister, Ruth, though they stopped writing decades ago.

We went to bed before 9, and neither Bruce nor I slept well.

In this picture below I look like I've been eating croissants nonstop for the last month. The lady in the middle in Tatiana.
